Relined Fiber Network has secured the definitive award of the Province of North Holland contract to connect 44 bridges and locks to Managed Dark Fibre. Relined will lay more than 170 kilometres of new fibre optic network to create these connections; a notable expansion of the fibre optic network in the Province of North Holland.

The contract covers the connection of 44 bridges and locks in the Province of North Holland to allow them to be controlled from a single control room. This number could rise to as many as 80 in the future, operated from two control rooms. The aim of this connection is to improve the flow of water traffic at acceptable cost. The parameters applying are high safety, minimum nuisance for road traffic (and rail traffic), predictability of (short) waiting times and great reliability.

“For this contract we have decided to lease Dark Fibre from Relined Fiber Network in part because of the robust and flexible network design which we are using to build a future-proof network. A lucid, clear and realistically defined plan that inspires confidence for successful, long-term collaboration.”

Chris de Vries, Management and Operations Director at the Province of North Holland

Dark Fibre will be used to send data between the control room and the bridges and locks. Large amounts of data can be sent quickly and safely with these unlit optical fibres.

Relined has worked out a design for the Province of North Holland consisting of different rings spread across the province. These rings have been designed to ensure that future wishes are easy to integrate. Different bridges and locks are interchangeable between different rings and space has been left in the rings for any future expansions.

“Since the Province of North Holland formulated its requirements clearly in the specifications, Relined has been able to provide a good response to them. We have worked out a custom solution with our team to look after the interests of the Province to best possible advantage, with quality and flexibility taking centre stage. We are therefore proud that we are now going to implement this custom solution in conjunction with the Province of North Holland!”

Robin de Waard, Operations Manager at Relined Fiber Network

The location of the new network that Relined is building is spread across North Holland. It covers not only big cities such as Amsterdam, Hoofddorp, Alkmaar, Hoorn and Den Helder, but also the rural areas in-between, known as the white areas. In the Province of North Holland various broadband initiatives are currently under way for these areas. With the construction of this new network Relined can easily provide these broadband initiatives with backbone connections.
