Digital education: education in this day and age

Digitalisering onderwijs

It wasn’t all that long ago that we hardly had access to information, so students at schools didn’t either. There was one teacher in front of the class who passed his or her knowledge on to the students, adapted to the age and level of the class. The arrival of the internet changed this, gradually. From that moment on, information was just a search and mouse click away and we could brush up on our knowledge easily.

The way we teach has also changed drastically in recent years. For example, digital learning resources are increasingly used to provide tailor-made education. As a result, it is important to look carefully at the IT infrastructure of schools. Fast internet is essential in order to be able to provide digital education. Read how Relined can contribute to this in this blog.

Digital education, i.e. customized education

As an educational institution, there’s no getting around it. Society is digitizing and pupils have to be prepared for this in order to function properly. Nowadays, it is impossible to imagine a classroom without digital learning tools. Smartphones, digital whiteboards and tablets are widely used to make learning more innovative. These teaching materials can also be used to provide tailor-made education, because the curriculum can be adapted to the pupil’s level.

Pupils can take fully interactive lessons using tablets, and teachers can in turn use a dashboard to monitor their progress and determine what additional support they may need. This is the approach used at Tabor College, a comprehensive school in Hoorn. In our customer case study you can read about how they use digital education and how they have designed their IT infrastructure for this purpose, with help from Relined and Art Of Automation.

Digitization of education not only has advantages for students; teachers benefit from it too. Because routine tasks can be digitized, more time is available to focus on student development. For example, digital resources can be used to automate the checking of tests and exams. However, an additional consequence is that teachers themselves must also be digitally literate in order to use the instructional materials efficiently.

Operational processes are also increasingly digital

Digitization in education goes beyond just using digital resources in teaching. More and more operational processes are being digitized too. Examples are payroll accounting and portals for students and parents, which are increasingly used to share important information.

A fast, safe and reliable network

In order for the above to succeed, the IT infrastructure of an educational institution must be designed in such a way that it is (or can be) always online. In some cases, it is not possible to teach without an internet connection. And with more than 30 people in one classroom – a common occurrence – a lot of bandwidth is needed to prevent the internet connection from slowing down. In short: schools are becoming dependent on the quality of the IT infrastructure.

A network has to be fast and stable, and also safe and future-oriented, because it involves the use of sensitive data and because a school may want to use even more digital resources in the future. Relined Fiber Network can provide the solution in this case. How? By using Dark Fibre, or unlit fibre optic cable. We supply fibre optic connections from A to B, using the stable and reliable Dark Fibres of public and/or private networks. As an educational institution, you have to purchase the light-generation equipment yourself and are free to make your own choices in that respect.

So with Dark Fibre you can really create your own connection. If you use a Dark Fibre network, everything is fully under your own management. This makes a Dark Fibre connection safe. In addition, Dark Fibre offers optimum scalability, unlimited bandwidth and a high degree of stability. In other words, it offers a network suitable for the education of the future!
